Our principal at Halifax is Alison Ruth McKerlie.
Alison began her training at the Celia Baxter School of Classical ballet and later on trained in Jazz, modern and tap, disco, ballroom and Latin American dance as well as continuing her Ballet studies. She briefly trained in Liverpool at the John Moores University Dance Faculty as part of a project in association with Knowsley School of Dance and then moved to London in her teens for a stint at the famous Sylvia Young Theatre School.
Alison has taken most of her professional qualifications in adulthood with the Newcastle Dance Centre under the watchful eye of ballroom dance sensations the Conways, as well as achieving teaching qualifications in contemporary freestyle studying under ‘Top of the Pops’ choreographer, Hayley Conway.
After achieving 4 ‘A’ levels in her hometown of Carlisle, Alison relocated once more to London where she worked as a freelance professional dancer as well as holding a year-long contract at the Savoy Hotel as Hostess for their world renowned Dinner Dances and monthly institution ‘Stompin at the Savoy’. Alison has performed on two West End stages – Adelphi Theatre and the New London Theatre and has performed in Barcelona as well as more localised tours in the UK and has appeared in various pantomimes with Charles Vance productions.
More recently Alison has worked as a professional choreographer, with a 12 month stint as resident choreographer for EL Leisure and also choreographing blockbuster musicals Barnum, Summer Holiday, South Pacific and Annie locally. Alison is also a fitness instructor and holds various qualifications in everything including Exercise to Music, Indoor Cycling and Gym Instruction (plus many more).
