Rhonwen McCormack and students

Razzamataz Manchester South!
Our principal at Manchester South is Rhonwen McCormack

summerschoolmanc
Rhonwen McCormack originally went straight from school to train as an actor at Charles Sturt University – Riverina in Australia, gaining a Bachelor of Arts (Acting for Stage & Screen), because at seventeen that was the only performing arts job she knew about. She worked as a professional actor for seven years, performing in television, film, theatre, T.I.E, and commercials. This led to her once being asked for her autograph by a counter hand at the Macdonalds in Sydney Airport. This also led to requests for her to work as a drama workshop leader with children of all ages at community theatre Dream Artz, and with beginner adults at City Drama Studio, both in Sydney.

During this time, Rhonwen began moonlighting as a theatre director, which she discovered to be far more fun. She founded and ran her own theatre company in Sydney, named Velvet Masque; directed theatre productions at the Edge Theatre, Fig Tree Theatre, Three Weeds, and Artstart: NSW Youth Arts and Skills Festival; and sold a lot of refreshments to school groups during the matinee intervals. Having established that she was actually rather good at this sort of thing, she applied for every professional theatre directing course in both Australia and the United Kingdom, was accepted into most of them, and around the turn of the millennium moved to Bristol to take up a place at her favourite, a Director’s Attachment at the prestigious Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.

BOVT’s so prestigious, it’s had famous people train there; but Rhonwen didn’t meet any of them, and earned extra pocket money washing sweat and stage blood out of costumes. She managed to fit in directing and assistant directing student productions at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre and Christchurch Studios, did a student attachment at English National Opera, because she has studied singing, can read music and thought it would be a fun thing to do, and then lived out of a suitcase for several years as she freelanced around the country for the Crucible Youth Theatre in Sheffield, Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts and Opera Integra in London, Etcetera Theatre and Jermyn Street Theatre in Off-West-End, Samuel Beckett Theatre in Dublin, Studio Salford in Salford, Avalon Opera in Yorkshire, 24:7 Theatre Festival in Manchester, and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Her suitcase was finally unpacked in Manchester, the city with the liveliest personality in the United Kingdom, where she now lives with her partner and little daughter. She has started up a new professional touring theatre company, Blue Masque, and she looks forward to sharing her passion and enthusiasm for the performing arts with the children of Manchester.
